Action Congress (AC) was formed through the merger of several opposition parties, including the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in September 2006. The party has support from across the country. Its presidential candidate in the April 2007 presidential elections was Atiku Abubakar (Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 -2007), who received the third highest number of votes.
